Discover Country House Restaurant

Walking into Country House Restaurant feels like stepping into a calm pocket of Wellington where the pace slows and comfort food takes center stage. I first visited after a long workday in Te Aro, drawn in by the warm lighting and the steady hum of conversation spilling onto Manners Street. The location at 57 Manners Street, Te Aro, Wellington 6011, New Zealand makes it easy to drop in whether you’re local or visiting the CBD, and that accessibility shows in the mix of regulars and first-timers filling the tables.

The menu leans into classic diner and country-style cooking, and that’s where the experience really shines. On my second visit, I watched a small group of office workers debate between a hearty roast and a lighter café-style plate, which sums up the range well. Dishes arrive generous and unfussy, focused on flavor rather than flash. The kitchen follows a straightforward process that many chefs still swear by: fresh prep each morning, slow cooking where it matters, and consistent portion control. According to data from Hospitality New Zealand, diners are more likely to return to restaurants that prioritize consistency over novelty, and that philosophy is evident here in how reliably the food lands.

One thing I appreciate is how the staff talk about the food. On one visit, a server explained how their gravy base is built gradually throughout the day, using pan drippings and stock rather than shortcuts. That kind of transparency builds trust, especially at a time when the New Zealand Food Safety authority continues to emphasize clear food handling and sourcing standards across the industry. While I can’t see every step in the kitchen, the results on the plate suggest those guidelines are taken seriously.

Reviews from other diners often mention the welcoming atmosphere, and that matches my experience. I’ve seen families with kids, solo diners reading the paper, and tourists refueling between shopping stops. A couple seated near me once mentioned they had found the place through online reviews after noticing how often it came up when searching for comfort food in Wellington. Their verdict after dessert was simple and confident: best value meal in the area. That sentiment pops up frequently, and it aligns with broader consumer research from Stats NZ showing that value for money remains one of the top factors influencing dining choices.

The location also plays a role in its popularity. Being right in Te Aro means easy access from multiple bus routes and a short walk from major shopping areas. That convenience supports steady foot traffic throughout the day, from late breakfasts to early dinners. Still, like many central city diners, space can feel tight during peak hours, which is worth noting if you prefer quieter settings.

What keeps me coming back is the sense that nothing here is trying too hard. The restaurant knows what it is and sticks to it. There are limits, of course; if you’re after cutting-edge fusion or a constantly changing seasonal menu, this may not be your spot. But for dependable meals, friendly service, and a menu that delivers exactly what it promises, it holds its ground in Wellington’s crowded food scene.

  • The (assumed) couple that run this place are amazingly friendly. We went here especially for bibimbap and were not disappointed. It would have been great for this place to have been busier, and probably deserves to be. My partner and I couldn't fault the food. The kimchi was great, the kimchi pancake was delicious and the Bibimbap was an absolute treat. Thank you!

  • Delicious authentic Korean food. I had the seafood stew and a kimchi pancake, both options were delicious. The meal came with some cold side dishes too. The lady who served us was very friendly. I’d be happy to go back there again.

  • We LOVE this place and have been going for maybe 15 years. It’s delicious, simple, clean and reliable. Home-style Korean food. And the owner is lovely. We never bother with the other Korean restaurants. Pity they don’t have a liquor licence - that’s the only way it could be better! But we still love it.
